Hi ya'll!
Well we are back from a week long mission trip to North Carolina's inner coast with the youth and we are busy resting with Netflix this evening! Sun, humidity, and early mornings can really take it out of you.
We traveled to Edenton, N.C., where we worked on 2 homes that had been completely destroyed by a tornado last April. These families stories of survival were quite remarkable and their new homes are looking to be finished in the next few months. Even though what I was able to do was limited, I did help paint outside! The youth finished the hardy board siding, worked on putting up soffets, pulling electrical wire, clean up, and of course lots of painting. A small group also completed 2 porch railings for another family. Most importantly, they worked on building relationships with each other and with the homeowners.
This picture shows one of the homeowners, David, and what was left of his home after the tornado. He and his son hid under the living room furniture. Can you imagine calling your wife and telling her that there was nothing to come home to???
This added on structure out back was the only part of the house still standing.
Leonnis, the other homeowner, always answered when you ask him how he was doing, "I'm blessed, I'm blessed." I think we all need to adopt that attitude!
On Wednesday we took a day off and instead spent it at the Outer Banks. We hung out at Nags Head Beach and then checked out the Bodie Island Lighthouse. The water was freezing!
Edenton also has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful small towns in North Carolina! We spent Friday night down at the waterfront, along the Albermarle Sound, and it did not disappoint. I would have loved to have explored the downtown area a little more carefully!
It was a fun week with a good amount of work accomplished. I'm hoping it was an experience that makes a difference in the lives of both the homeowners and the participants!
Next up: vacation! :)

ode to the weekend
Summer break is so close I can taste it. Today was the last day of school for students! 2 workdays stand in between me and summer! I even survived my first year of EOG testing. I will miss those sweet faces, but I love summer break!
Cleaned our desks with shaving cream .. the kids love it!
In the meantime, enjoy some Spring snapshots from our weekends!
On Memorial Day we went hiking with some friends to Moore's Knob at Hanging Rock State Park. This is quickly becoming a favorite destination because there are numerous things to do at this park. This particular hike was a little more strenuous with hundreds of stairs, but at least we had mountain laurel to enjoy along the way.
We made a very quick trip home in May to meet our new niece Addalee!
We've taken a few trips to the local creamery .. and you must go if you are local!
This past weekend we made another quick trip, except this time to Athens, Georgia, where Justin performed a wedding for some friends. Athens is a neat town and is home to Georgia State University.
What have you been up this Spring?

We spent a Sunday afternoon on the Deep River trail.
Took in a Greensboro Grasshoppers game with friends.
And a few home projects of course.
What have you been up this Spring?

hello, spring
Oh, hello!
Suddenly, you realize that the blog has been quiet for a good three or four weeks ..whoooops!
It is officially Spring and I am so thankful to be seeing blooms and sunshine most days!
We spent the weekend working out in our yard .. and my oh my we may finish by next Spring! There is a lot more to take care of at this house! And our guest bathroom makeover is so. close. to being done!
Last weekend we traveled to Lake Junaluska in Western North Carolina with the confirmation group at church for a very busy retreat. A weekend with 12 and 13 year olds will really wear you out! ;)
It's hard to believe that just a few weeks ago we were enjoying a beautiful snowfall .. all 7 inches of it! Unfortunately we traded all but one day of our Spring Break.
However, snow has been officially banned from the weather forecast and I am more than ready for the warm temperatures and the new life of Spring!
So, Spring, welcome!
