We read ALOT of Dr. Seuss books and spent a lot of time focusing on rhyming words. We worked on changing letters to create new words in the -at Word Family and the -am Word Family. We also did a Cat in the Hat beginning sounds match.
The first book we read was The Cat in the Hat. During small groups students made Thing 1, Cat in the Hat, and practiced AB patterns with stripes and hats from teachpreschool.org. Students responded to the story by writing about if they would let Cat in the Hat come in their house and what would happen if Thing 1 and Thing 2 came to their house.

Cat in the Hat Story Map - Actually an original idea! Haha!
Another story we read was Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? We talked about different sound words and recorded them on a chart.
Of course we read The Lorax! The kids love this story! We made a story map about the story.

Next came The Foot Book. We talked about opposites and rhyming words. During small groups students wrote pairs of opposites on pairs of feet and traced their feet and put them in order from smallest to largest.

We also enjoyed a visit from Cat in the Hat himself (herself?! ha!)

Another book we read was Oh, The Place's You'll Go. We discussed different places we would like to visit and created a chart together about different modes of transportation to get there. During small groups students responded to the story by painting where they would like to go and creating a hot air balloon.
