Serve in Love: NC Coast

It's a rainy Monday here in Georgia! I hope your weekend was more exciting than mine. We played some tennis, swam in the pool, washed some laundry, and pretty much just hung out at home.

As promised, today I'm going to share about my trip to the NC Coast. I spent a week with my hubby's youth volunteering in response to Hurricane Irene, which hit in August of 2011. We traveled to Bayboro, NC, a TINY town along in the intercoastal waterways of the Pamlico Sound.

The trip had a rather eventful start - we needed 2 vehicles so we borrowed a small bus from another church. About an hour away from home the bus blew a tire. We pulled over, changed the tire, and got back on the road. A few minuets later smoke started coming out from under the bus. We pulled over again but were not able to identify the source. My hubby got on the phone and a mechanic was called to come meet us. We were, of course, in the middle of nowhere and it was Sunday. Meanwhile, the side of the bus caught on fire. Justin put out the worst of it out with a fire extinguisher and fire department sprayed everything real good. When the mechanic arrived we found out that the blown tire had bent the exhaust pipe, causing the exhaust to come out against the side of the bus. By this point we had no hope of reaching NC at a reasonable hour, so we turned around and headed back home. Monday morning we tried again with a different vehicle! Thankfully, we had no other problems!

Our group spent the week working on a family's house sanding sheetrock, putting in baseboards and crown molding, painting, washing windows, pulling weeds, and some other small jobs. We explored a little bit in Bayboro and on Wednesday we took the day off to visit Atlantic Beach and Fort Macon. We rode a ferry from the mainland out to the island and it was a couple of kids first boat ride ever!

It was great week of fellowship together, worship, student led devotions, and of course a chance to focus on the needs of some else rather than your own. Really reminds you how blessed you are. Check out the photos below:

That's all for today!
