my one word: intentional

2015 is here and already a week old .. how are your resolutions going??! So far 2015 has brought some rainy, super cold weather, and sick day for me .. blah!

Today I have my one word resolution for 2015 ready to share with you. This idea really seems to have caught on this year .. its so inspiring to see others choose different ways to better themselves! The idea behind the one word resolution is that our resolutions seldom work because they are based on the type of person we’re tired of being rather than who God wants us to become. Plus, resolutions can be “broken,” leaving no room for the process of growth. What if our hopes for the year ahead centered instead on who God wants us to become?

In 2013 my focus word was grateful, in 2014 I continued along with the same idea and chose content, and this year my word is intentional.

Dictionary definition: adjective; done on purpose, intended. A determination to act in a certain way, fixity of purpose, firm determination marked by boldness and steadiness

Synonyms: planned, designed, deliberate

Living an intentional life will be a chance for me to say no to good things so that I can say yes to the best things and to clarify my purpose in things that I choose to do or be apart of.

Specifically, I will be seeking to become intentional in these ways:

1) Intentional with my time. I am planning on reading The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst, a book that is designed to help you take control of your time and learn to say yes to only the things that matter most. I am also going to continue to use my goal sheets and planning tools in order to maximize and prioritize my to do list.

2) Intentional with building deeper relationships. Justin and I actually do a pretty job of spending quality time together and making each other a priority. However, we are both guilty of focusing a great deal of extra time on work. We have also already planned 2 intentional dates each month for the entire year of 2015!

3) Intentional in my faith walk. Unfortunately, I have never been successful with spending time in the Word on a daily basis for any extended amount of time. I am trying out She Read's Truth and so far I love it!

4) Intentionally being present. Put away the phone, laptop, or any other distracting device more often. Enjoy the moments I am in.

5) Intentional with our finances. Again, not an area that we greatly struggle in, but it certainly will not hurt to take a good hard look at our budget and make sure we are planning exactly where our money will go.

Of course there have been some other words bouncing around in my head for 2015 as well!
  • Explore: Local and far away destinations- I want to see and experience it all!
  • Cultivate: I just love this word! Things I want to create, or cultivate, include a cozy home filled with our DIY projects and personal touches, beautiful photographs, kindness, and a love of learning!
  • Movement: So I received the Garmin Vivo Fit for Christmas and I am anxious move more- to the gym, outside, on a mountain ..

Thanks for joining this journey with me .. what is your focus for 2015?

  1. I love your word, it is one that has been bouncing in my head and heart for a while and I plan on doing the same, being more intentional this year. It wasn't the WORD He picked for me, but it certainly was part of it. The lists are a great way to keep you accountable and I pray you will have more time in His Word as you grow more intentional this year.
    Blessings!

  4. Wonderful word to focus on this year. I chose "Believe" >>> "Do not be afraid, just believe...." (Luke 8:50). I know I believe IN God but I want to believe Him & all that He says in His Word without wavering. I want to believe Him. May we grow in Him & with others as we focus on our words for 2015. Glad to have visited from Hearts for Home!
